Stallion Show Report 2006

The 2006 Stallion Grading at Hartpury College got off to a flying start with a Mare Grading on the Saturday afternoon that saw over 30 mares coming forward. Such were the numbers, depth and quality that the society decided to award a Mare Winter Grading Championship for the first time. The winner was the exceptionally elastic and correct Foxboro Whispered Secret who impressed with her type. Five mares were graded Select including the Reserve Champion Meacham Martini, followed by Meacham Metz, Durfee Riviera  and the beautiful Wolkentanz daughter Winova.

The Sunday morning was thankfully dry as the presentation of the stallions on hard ground was, of course, outside. Twenty stallions were presented for full Grading representing between them some of the most recognized International pedigrees and some well known thoroughbred and British Sires.

The judges were Dr Eberhard Senckenberg from the Langestuet Schwaiganger and Dr Gebhard, a very seasoned and experienced Judge and Director of Landgestuet Marbach.  They felt that stallion group presented was strong but the general impression was some lack of looseness and suppleness. There were a number of “near misses” – stallions that had great type but lacked either correctness or temperament. In one or two cases the stallions paid the price for poor preparation although the judges were complimentary about the standard of presentation in general. They were most excited about the presentation of two thoroughbred stallions – Downe Right Rebel, a son of Mayhill and the Nashwan son Chase the Ace who raced under the name of No Aman. Both stallions are performers in the sport with Rebel representing thoroughbred breeding for eventing and Chase the Ace competing successfully at Advanced and trained by Michel Assouline. Both stallions were graded into the Warm Blood Stallion Book.

An exceptionally attractive coloured stallion by the British Sport Horse stallion Jumbo continued his sire’s tradition and gave another success to his owner  and breeder Carolyn Bates. The horse had great presence, composure and showed good looseness and athleticism.

A further six stallions were graded and came, in the majority from the three and four year old group. Of these, only the Reserve Champion, Santano, was British bred by Cheryl Mitchell. This was a big moving and big framed horse and is owned and will be competed by Katrina Cantrell Bennett. Another exciting combination to come was the Christian Heinrich, German bred, Refarge. This son of Rohdiamiant showed an exceptional walk and exemplary temperament. As a future partner for our multi Olympian Lee Pearson, the stallion gained many fans on the day. For Sue Griffin, her chestnut son of Fuerst Heinrich did not disappoint. This was a horse of good gaits and character and evidenced the qualities that made his sire World Champion Dressage Horse at six.

The KWPN was represented by two sons – Wonderfull Van T Zwaanenheike by the Ferro stallion Rhodium out of a Vincent x Rubinstein mother; and Wizrd B a Gribaldi son from a Houston x Wellington dam.  Wonderfull  was exactly that in his temperament and attitude to work and it was this quality that secured his place in the stallion line up. Wizard B was a big and impressive horse with a very good scope and technique in the jumping lane and took another success home for his owner Carolyn Bates.

The Champion Stallion was the British bred Hanoverian colt, Wesuvio,  from Woodlander Stud, and the only graded two year old. With good but not extraordinary gaits and a walk that on the day started off a little short, this young stallion triumphed with his type and the correctness of his limbs. The Judges pronouncement that his type and frame were almost perfect was further evidence of the need for quality in broodmares. By the stallion Walentino, Woodlander Wesuvio is out of the stud’s amazingly consistent mare St Pr Savanah. Wesuvio is the half brother to the 2004 Reserve Champion Woodlander Rockstar who also sired the Champion and Reserve Champion foals at the BWBS Summer Show 2006. His dam Savanah produced the 2005 Champion foal Woodlander Foxy Lady by Florencio. The depth and consistency of this breeding is significant for British Warm Blood Society breeders.

The final stallion Group saw the presentation of stallions graded by other studbooks who have met the performance test or competition criteria of the BWBS. In order to be accepted, all had to undertake current vetting and assure the society that they were free, as far as can be seen, from hereditary defects. Two four year old stallions from the recent Hanoverian Grading, both performance tested, brought the blood of Breitling x Florestan and Di Caprio x Warkant into the UK. Owned by Jill Hodges and Half Moon Stud respectively, both stallions are destined for the sport. The Breitling son Being Bling will be ridden by Carl Hester and Delicato, the big framed son of Di Caprio will be ridden by his owner Julie Deverill.

Two further imports were described by the Judges as being a great loss to German breeding. Kate Gibson brought forward her own Desert Moon. With a very impressive list of credentials this son of De Niro was the second highest priced stallion at the Verden auctions in 2001 and went on to be highly placed in the Bundeschampionat. A son of Weltbogen was brought forward by Hannah Biggs. This was a 100 day tested stallion from the State Stud at Celle and has already achieved further competition success with his new owner and rider in the UK.

In summary a great day for all concerned with a good audience and atmosphere. The Breeder’s evening on the Saturday night was well attended and the Judges commented on its “gemutlichkeit”. Congratulations to all and special thanks to the less visible helpers of the society most notably Richard Chamberlain who helped with the merchandise, Cliff Waller who was tireless in his stewarding and Cerys Jones who managed all the back office admin to allow for even the latest entries to come forward.

Stallions 3 years of age may be in an open class with mature stallions, these will be subject to the higher entry fee unless a veterinary certificate is produced stating they were unable to attend grading at the required age, due to accident, sickness or injury. Imported stallions should provide proof of their date of entry into the UK.

  1. Young Stallions with any permanent disability or unsoundness will not be accepted for stallion grading. Older PROVEN Stallions who are unsound through permanent injury, will be allowed to come forward for assessment. A full and complete veterinary report must accompany these entries. 4. Stallions will normally need to attend BWBS / BSHR Grading only once. However, in some circumstances stallions may have certain restrictions laid on them by the judges as part of their critique. These may include re-appearing at grading again at a later date or having a progeny inspection.

  5. Stallions who are granted 1 or 2 years covering permission will receive covering permission only for the period allocated. During that time a progeny inspection must be carried out with the stallion owner being responsible to present at least 3 offspring for inspection at the annual stallion grading.
